Their are two places that detain suspected terrorists, Guantanamo Bay is the one created by the United States and another that is becoming just as bad in Australia. Both equally brutal in the same way, many detainees have tried committing suicide. The article states the extent to the problem, "Last August, the United Nations Human Rights Committee found that the detainees were being illegally held, without proof or judicial protection, in cruel, inhuman or degrading circumstances"(Saul).
The punishments are brutal and the crimes are not proven to of happened. The radius of the punishments do not stop at the "suspected terrorists" but their families as well. Children under eight years old were detained in a separated facility, "The report found that detention had severely impaired the children’s psychological development"(Saul). Activists are trying to condemn the "Guantanamo Bay of Australia".
Unrest, in Venezuela is a big part of the news right now as protests rage against the government. Protests are now violent, "On Friday night, for example, security forces used water cannon and teargas in a battle against protesters using stones and petrol bombs, Reuters witnesses said"(Buitrago and Cawthorne).
The protests have not gone incredibly off the charts with deaths and arrested protestors but, their are many who have been detained and a few deaths. The government still has laws placed and are regulating police brutality, "More than 1,500 people have been arrested, of whom about 100 are still in jail. They include 21 security officials accused of using excess force"(Buitrago and Cawthorne).
